The large ribbon-bow motif brooches of the turn-of-the-century ‘Belle Epoque’ era continued their popularity throughout the Edwardian period and extended to 1920s to inspire a great deal of Art Deco jewelry. The Edwardian jewelry, renowned for its absorbing monochromatic aesthetic and with diamonds as the preferred precious stones par excellence, promoted the garland motif brooches, which were almost exclusively made of platinum. The garland design resembled the fine and lacy embroidery on precious metal, produced delicate, yet sophisticated diamond-encrusted pieces and did not fade in its popularity throughout the century which has elapsed.
