Vintage jewelry is normally used to refer to jewelry from the retro era through the 1960's.
Retro jewelry is vintage jewelry from the 1940's that was inspired by Hollywood and is colorful, bold and elaborate. Commonly worn were large cocktail rings, bracelets, watches, necklaces and charm bracelets that were typically made in yellow gold or rose gold. This is in part due to the fact that platinum was a stratigic metal during WWII and therefore restricted from use in jewelry.
After the war and through the 50s, platinum and white gold made a comeback and items like floral spray pins were all the rage. Rubies made way for diamonds again. A new middle class was born after the war and New York started making more jewelry than ever before.
