The Roaring Twenties and King Tut's Tomb

What do the Roaring Twenties and King Tut's tomb have in common? They were both important influences in the Art Deco jewelry design movement.

The twenties were a decadent period. Picture jazz clubs filled with women wearing cropped hair, dangling Art Deco earrings and short flapper dresses. It was at an art fair in Paris during this period where the style of the era was given a name “Art Deco”.

What Defines Art Deco Jewelry

What influenced the Art Deco jewelry style of the 1920's?

Well, speed, for one. Many Art Deco estate jewelry pieces will have arrows, cars, planes; any motif that would suggest going fast. There was plenty of money to spend and a desire for bold intensity, which is why you will notice the use of bold colors in our Art Deco estate jewelry items.

The other major influencing factor of the times was the discovery King Tut's tomb in 1923.

Symbols of Egypt like the Sphinx, falcon and the scarab began popping up everywhere. Even more popular were the jewels discovered in the tomb, including carnelian and lapis lazuli.

Lapis lazuli, a deep azure blue gemstone with shimmering gold inclusions, is still popular today and will often be found in earrings and other Art Deco estate jewelry pieces.

Shapes, Stones & Metals of Art Deco Estate Jewelry

Let's look at the three distinct aspects of jewelry from the Art Deco period.

Art Deco Estate Jewelry Shapes

When shopping online for Art Deco estate jewelry for sale, one sure-fire way to identify Art Deco jewelry pieces is by the popular shapes of the time.  Bold geometric shapes, with plenty of squares, triangles and hexagons were all the rage.

Art Deco estate rings, especially engagement rings, will often emphasize square, rectangle and long extended rectangle shapes. In jeweler's terms these geometric shapes are known as Princess, Emerald and Baguette.

Art Deco Estate Jewelry Stones

The economy was booming so expensive stones, like rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds were used lavishly. Shop online for Art Deco estate rings and you'll immediately notice how huge the trend was for brightly colored gemstones and precious jewels.

It wasn't until the Great Depression of the 1930's that jewelry designers began making less expensive jewelry.

Art Deco Estate Jewelry Metals

The 1920's were all about luxury so both yellow and white gold were used a lot. Platinum could easily handle larger stones so; it too, became a metal of choice. You won't often find Art Deco estate jewelry made from silver however. Silver wasn't considered luxurious enough for the times.
