Victorian Necklace Designs And Other Types Of Early Victorian Jewelry

The Early Victorian era was known as sentimental and therefore love tokens, mementoes and souvenirs were very popular. One popular type of Early Victorian era jewelry was lockets. These accessories were enjoyed by everyone and could be made from several types of material. Lockets often contained painted miniatures or small photographs during later years. Lockets were often worn under the clothing to protect the contents from being seen by others.

Another popular item was brooches which could be worn in a variety of ways. They were worn on the shoulder, the neck, waist, hair or on ribbons as necklaces and bracelets. In addition to the standard silver, gold and base metals; brooches were also made from pique, tortoiseshell, mother of pearl and lava.

During both the Georgian and Victorian eras religious symbols were popular among jewelry designs. Some popular designs were crosses, ivy, doves and Greek letters. Snakes and other symbols of eternity were used to make rings, bracelets, brooches and necklaces. Victorian design often featured elements of sentimentality and symbolism. You could often read jewelry like a book, with the design telling of the givers feelings or hopes.

Those who designed Victorian era jewelry preferred natural themes and flowers like earlier eras. A piece sent known as en tramblant was an interesting design of this era. This jewelry design was mounted on a spring so it had a twinkling effect and moved slightly as the wearer of the jewelry moved.

However, the Victorians were also practical in their jewelry designs. Similar to Georgian era jewelry, many pieces of jewelry were designed to come apart to form several wearable forms of jewelry. A Victorian necklace could have a metal rod inserted which allowed it to become rigid and able to be worn as a tiara. However, early Victorian era jewelry was often smaller and more delicate unlike the larger and heavier jewelry pieces from the Georgian era.
